Mortgage price war is the perfect New Year gift to home buyers

The property market often slows at this time of year, and when you add Brexit and election uncertainty into the mix it means that the high street lenders have entered into a price war offering the cheapest ever deals to borrowers.

Average rates for five-year, ten-year and even fifteen-year mortgages are now at the lowest level on record, while two-year fixes are also available at highly competitive rates.

Sally Walls, mortgage adviser with Homeline Mortgages said “Despite people being wary about finances, now is a good time to look into how you can take advantage of these incredibly low interest rates. It’s a good time to fix your borrowing either for a new mortgage or to review your current arrangements. It could also be worth using this opportunity to consolidate existing debt and significantly reduce your monthly outgoings.”

For those hoping to get onto the property ladder, it also represents a good time to get a good mortgage deal as some lenders cut fixed rates on 95% loan-to-value (LTV) mortgages at the beginning of December.

Sally added “Mortgage lenders are like any other business, they need to keep up with their competitors to attract customers, and at the moment this means that it’s the customer who wins. Cheap borrowing can really benefit homeowners, especially with the ability to fix for a longer period if that is what suits you.”
